Sunil makes these on the lathe he uses for bangles, in the four lac colours he works in: the natural red of the resin, black from lamp soot, yellow from gamboge, and the green he mixes and will not discuss. Lac is a natural resin and it is laid on by friction, with no solvent and nothing added afterwards, which is why it is an acceptable finish for a toy that will be chewed.
The post is rounded at the top and set into a wide base so the whole thing cannot tip when a child leans on it. The rings have a deliberate amount of slop — a ring that needs to be aimed precisely is a ring a two-year-old will throw across the room.
Five rings. Traditionally there would be seven, but the two smallest in a seven-ring set fall inside the range a small child can choke on, so we do not make them.
