The shell is cut from Padmini's offcuts — the ends of the batik lengths, where the pattern runs out or the crackle went somewhere unplanned. It means every turtle is a different animal and none of the cloth is wasted, which is the sort of arrangement that only works when the person cutting and the person dyeing are the same person.
The eyes are embroidered. There are no buttons, no plastic safety eyes, no glued parts and no ribbon. The flippers are stitched flat to the body rather than stuffed, so there is nothing narrow enough to work loose at the seam.
Stuffed with kapok from the pods of the tree that grows along the road at Bentota. It is lighter than polyester and it clumps a little over the years, which is what old soft toys are supposed to do.
