Nimal carves these differently from the ones he sells to adults. The legs are short and thick, the trunk curls in against the chest instead of standing out, and the ears are cut close to the head. Every part that could be snapped off has been designed not to stick out in the first place.
Kaduru is the wood. It is pale, soft enough to carve quickly, and light — this elephant weighs almost nothing for its size, which matters when it gets thrown. The finish is a food-safe oil rather than a lacquer or a paint, because everything at this size goes in a mouth eventually and the answer to that should be "it is oiled wood" rather than a list of ingredients.
His initials are cut into the belly. He has done that on every carving since 1989.
