The story
Four cups and four saucers in pressed pink glass. Hold one up and the light goes straight through it — this is not painted or coated, the colour is in the glass itself, added as a metal oxide while it was molten.
The saucers are the better piece. Turn one over and the underside is swirled into a spiral of fluting that catches light from below and throws it back up through the cup. It is a piece of design that only works when the set is actually on a table with something under it.
Glass like this was made in enormous quantities in France and sold everywhere, including here. It is tougher than it looks — tempered pressed glass rather than blown — and it has survived several decades of somebody's kitchen to get this far.
