The story

A rolled vinyl board and thirty-two plastic pieces in a screw-capped tube. There is nothing precious about it and that is the entire appeal: it weighs almost nothing, it survives a rucksack, and losing it would cost you ten dollars rather than ruin your week.

The tube is the design. Unscrew one end, the board rolls out flat and stays flat, and the pieces tip out of the other. Everything goes back in about fifteen seconds. Sets like this went everywhere with everyone before phones had chess on them.

The graphics on the tube have faded on one side, which tells you it sat on a shelf in the light for a long time before it got to us.
