A board and nothing else. Sixty-four squares in matte black and pale straw, ruled with a fine border line, set into a dark timber frame deep enough that it stands up on a shelf as an object in its own right.
The colours are worth a word. Chess boards are conventionally called black and white but are almost never actually white — a true white square glares under a lamp and makes the pieces hard to read. This one uses a straw yellow, which is the traditional answer and much easier to play on for two hours.
No pieces come with it. If you have a set already, or you want the roll-up set's pieces on something better than vinyl, this is the board for it.
