Care
Hand wash only, and never the dishwasher — detergent strips gilding within a few cycles and it cannot be put back. Do not microwave; the gold will arc. Stack the plates with a cloth between them.

The story
This is the most decorated object in the shop and it makes no apology for it. A peacock stands among peonies and flowering branches on every piece, framed by a navy band worked over with gilt scrollwork and a fish-scale ground. It is the sort of service that was bought once, for a wedding, and then kept in a cabinet and used four times.
The painting is transfer-printed with hand-applied gilding over the top, which is how good mid-century Japanese export porcelain was made — the print carries the detail, and a person lays the gold on afterwards by hand. Look closely at the rim and you can see where the brush started and stopped.
Fifteen pieces: teapot and lid, sugar bowl and lid, milk jug, six cups, and six plates. It has been washed, checked and repacked. Nothing about it is subtle and that is entirely the point.
